STIHL Information

STIHL warns about imitations
Take care: what looks like a bargain may turn out to be very expensive, as the low price of counterfeit chain saws goes hand in hand with shorter life, less power and reduced safety.
However counterfeits are not always offered at low prices. In many cases the prices are only a little lower than the original product prices. This is done to create the impression that they are original STIHL products.
Counterfeits are hazardous
Whereas STIHL products are characterised, among other things, by strict quality and safety standards, this is not the case with imitations. Often the counterfeit machines break down after only a short time in use, and as spare parts are not available they cannot be repaired. Moreover, safety-critical devices may be faulty or totally absent. For example, the hand guard for the automatic chain brake - the most important safety device on a chain saw - was found to be broken when one counterfeit saw was unpacked.
STIHL chain saws have become a focus of attention for imitators. Most of the counterfeits come from China and they look like the original STIHL products, especially with their orange/ light grey colour scheme. Furthermore, consumers are taken in by forged stickers with the ' STIHL' brand name, and in some cases familiar model designations like ' MS 440' are marked on the saws. Apart from their colours and the model designation, these chain saws have nothing in common with the original STIHL chain saws.
How can you protect yourself?
Street vendors, flea markets and car boot sales are always a sure sign of counterfeit, inferior, risky products. The same applies to new products offered for sale on the Internet.
STIHL distributes its products exclusively through its network of STIHL Approved Dealers thus guaranteeing original products, service and advice. At your STIHL Approved dealer, you can be sure of getting full STIHL quality, and not some cheap imitation.

Increasing numbers of " non-compliant products " are being sold on the European market through different channels of distribution. In this context the term " non-compliant " means non-fulfilment of the relevant legal requirements, especially the safety and emissions regulations for the protection of users.
The DPLF ( Deutsche Prà ¼ f- und Zertifizierungsstelle fà ¼ r Land- und Forsttechnik) , a recognized, accredited and neutral testing institute subjected a number of different chainsaw models to all the tests that such machines have to pass before they are put onto the EU market. The machines tested did not fulfil the statutory requirements of the harmonized safety and environment standards. This means that the user and third parties are exposed to a substantially higher risk of injury, and also an increased risk of damage to health and the environment due to impermissibly high exhaust emissions. In the latter case values were measured which are many times higher than the legally permitted limits. The conclusion is that machines of identical construction may not be placed on the market within the legal boundaries of the EU â € “ any machines already on the market represent a serious risk.
The devastating consequences become particularly clear in a direct comparison carried out with an original STIHL MS 440 and a non-compliant PowerHaus KW 6500 on the basis of three tests selected as examples. The PowerHaus KW 6500 not only represents a danger to the user, it also misleads him by giving him the impression of an original product with its typical STIHL color scheme and thus infringes the orange/ light gray color brand.
