Ultrasonic thickness gauges are used to measure the thickness of materials which include steel, stainless steel, cast iron, glass, and plastics ( including PVCs) . Their key use is in detecting uniformity and flaws in material thickness including checking the extent of corrosion in metals.

These gauges can be set to and then measure the velocity or sound of specific types of materials. Some instruments will measure basic types of metals, some instruments will measure with coatings, and will include the coating in the measurement; others will eliminate the coating itself - the gauges are clever enough to measure the thickness and eliminate the 1-2mm of coating that could be on the structure.
